 COMMUNITY HEALTH

Communities are at the heart East Texas AHEC.  We respond to community needs through two community health support programs, Community Health Literacy and Community Health Systems

Community-Responsive Programs

We maintain programs addressing community health issues such as

    Cancer Awareness
    Domestic Violence
    Emergency Preparedness
    Geriatric Sensitivity
    Obesity
    Pandemic Flu Prevention
    Tobacco Cessation

In affiliation with the American Heart Association we offer a variety of courses that teach the skills and techniques necessary for cardiopulmonary resuscitation, the Heimlich maneuver for choking, and how to handle various first aid emergencies.  Audiences range from children and laypersons to healthcare workers.

We promote programs such as the American Cancer Society's "Quit Line" to healthcare and dental workers and employees at work sites and healthcare facilities.  On the nationwide Great American Smoke Out day, we have partner with the Texas Department of Health, American Cancer Society and East Texas Community Health to visit elementary schools, shopping centers, and hospitals.

We provide breast cancer health education training and breast health information.

We distribute  “HealthWise for Life” handbooks to medically underserved and rural populations.

We purchase tooth models used to educate "Head Start" children about proper brushing and dental hygiene.

We sponsor monthly workshops for diabetics at no charge.

Please contact your regional center for more information regarding activities in your area.
